LadleSafe at RuukkiSucessful startup of LadleSafe at Ruukki

The Metsol LadleSafe™ system is now in full operation since October 2011 at the Ruukki steelplant in Raahe, northern Finland.

The system is used for continuous monitoring of ladles while these are processed in the ladle furnace. When a hot-spot is detected by the system, the operator is alerted to take action to avoid a steel break-out.

Ladlesafe™ is integrated with the Rukki production system for exchange of ladle status and logistics data.

-“The LadleSafe™ system is now up and running and has already served its purpose when warning for a ladle close to breakout. By avoiding this failure we saved considerable costs worth of damages and loss of production, not to mention the risk of personal injuries. LadleSafe makes our melt shop a safer place to work at.”, says Heikki Pärkkä, ladles and refractories, Rukki Rahe steel plant, Finland.

Operator training for more efficient production

Metsol has been awarded a contract to perform a training programme for operators in the steelmaking unit of a major Swedish steel company.

The training programme is designed in order to obtain a more efficient production through a higher awareness and understanding of the key elements of production:

  • Equipment - functionality and limitations
  • Processing - principals and practical handling
  • Production flow and logistics - lean production for high quality and efficiency

Training is an efficient method to boost motivation and to increase awareness when changing production strategy. Metsol has a long tradition of designing operator training programmes for steelmakers, typically in times of low production or as part of a production efficiency programme.

Metsol assists Ovako to take production

one step further

The Swedish steel producer Ovako has awarded Metsol AB the task to support in the development of the steelplant Level 2 and Level 3 process control and planning systems.

Metsol AB’s assignment is to define necessary functionality in order to fulfill present and future needs, thus meeting the expected increase in customer demands on product quality and performance.

-“We are pleased to have reached an agreement with Metsol AB. This will enable us to secure the competence needed in order to fulfill our strategic goals”, says Andreas Carlsson, steel plant manager in the Ovako plant located in Smedjebacken, Sweden.

Ovako - a feel for steel

Ovako Smedjebacken plant is a mini-mill with EAF-LF-CC production line that produces long products which are further processed in the rolling mills in Smedjebackan and Boxholm. Read more about Ovako on www.ovako.com

Meet with Metsol at EOSC 2011 in Stockholm

Take the opportunity to meet with us if you are planning to attend the EOSC 2011 conference in Stockholm, Sweden. Stop by our booth and discuss technological packages for a more safe and efficient metals production.

Also take the oportunity to listen to our papers presented at the conference technical sessions:EOSC 2011 Conference in Stockholm
  • Dr Mselly Nzotta, Uddeholm AB, will present the importance of slag removal in order to increase steel quality with respect to non-metallic inclusions. The Metsol system LadleSlag was used to guarantee low slag carry-over and consistent slag removal every time.

  • Mr Sverker Ölund, Metsol AB, will present the LadleHeat technological package for keeping track of the thermal status of ladles in circulation. Real-time calculation and measurement model update guarantees a correct ladle thermal status to be used as input to the furnace tapping temperature calculation

Ruukki orders LadleSafe

The Finnish high quality flat products steelmaker Ruukki (Rautaruukki Corporation) has awarded Metsol an order on the LadleSafe ladle breakthrough early detection system. The system will be used for continuous monitoring of ladles while processed in the ladle furnace at the steel plant located in Raahe, Finland.

If a hot-spot is detected by the LadleSafe-system a warning is issued to the operator, who will react and take measures to avoid steel break through. Thus, personnel injuries, loss of production, and equipment damages can be avoided.

- "In our production personnel safety, production stability, and delivery accuracy are key elements. I believe that LadleSafe helps us to reach further on these areas in order to achieve our goals ", says Jukka Vatanen, head of refractories at the steel plant in Raahe, Finland.

LadleFill - tapping surveillance

SSAB EMEA in Luleå, Sweden has awarded Metsol to supply a tapping monitoring system for surveillance of ladle metal level during tapping.

The LadleFill system will be used to monitor the torpedo car tapping of hot metal into transfer ladles and assists the operator to detect the metal liquid surface level in order to stop pouring in due time.

Overfilling the ladle above a predefined target level initially triggers an alarm. If the tapping proceeds, a second alarm is triggered and the tapping will be aborted.

The system is based on vision technology for thermal cameras where a continuous feed of the thermal image stream is processed by the LadleFill analysis algorithms. The output from the image analysis is presented to the operator and automatically interpreted to keep track of the metal level in the ladle.

Overfilling of ladles is occasionally occurring in different locations of metals production. In integrated steelmaking, tapping the torpedo cars into ladles is a process where overfilling occurs from time to time due to the discrepancy in volume between the two vessels in combination with severe smoke and dust generation. Any metal spillage on ladle cars and similar is likely to cause damage and loss of production.
